Methuen’s Shilling Novels

Methuen & Company, Ltd. (London, UK)
Series dates: 1905-1935
Size: 4.75″ x 7″

Methuen’s Shilling Novels, like Methuen’s Cheap Novels, were cheap novels printed and bound with a minimum investment by the publisher. Jacket artwork was aimed to catch the attention of early 20th century readers. An April 1905 Methuen & Co. catalog announces the series with the initial titles:

London’s White Fang is a 1932 thirtieth edition (second in the Shilling Library). This title came relatively late in the series time span. The price (1/-) is announced on the jacket spine. Additional Methuen books on dogs are advertised on the front jacket flap.

New titles in the Shilling Novels are listed on the back of the jacket. Other publisher titles are advertised on the rear flap.

Bindings are light cloth binding printed in black.

The series name is indicated in the book, facing the title page with a brief list of recent titles.

The copyright page has an extensive list of printings of White Fang.

A close-up indicates this to be the 30th edition, 1932, 2nd printing in the series:
