Phoenix Library of Food and Drink

Chatto & Windus (London, UK)
Series Dates: 1936-1947
Size: 7.25″ x 5″
Revised 5/15/2023

“The six volumes included in the new Phoenix Library of Food and Drink are all good in their degrees and kinds…” said a brief review of the new series in the periodical Time & Tide (p. 1842, Volume 17, 1936).

In design and name, the series was an adjunct to the successful Phoenix Library, which began in 1928. The jacket design mimics the Phoenix Library, with jackets printed in green instead of red.

The jackets, common to the series, include the series name, split in two, in the design at the top and bottom of the jacket front. Specific details of the series (title and authors) are overprinted in black. No series number is on the jacket. The front jacket flap is blank but for the price (3s/6d net) as on earlier copies of the Phoenix Library. Later copies include a list of titles on the front and rear jacket flaps.

The back of the jacket lists 8 titles in the series.

I believe this list of eight titles to be complete:

1. The Anatomy Of Dessert, Edward Bunyard
2. French Wines, Paul De Cassagnac
3. Cook’s Tour Of European Kitchens, K. And M. Von Schumacher
4. Five Hundred Sandwiches, Florence Cowles
5. New Dishes From Left-Overs, Coral Smith
6. A Pretty Kettle Of Fish, Elizabeth Lucas
7. Good Food From Sweden, Inga Norberg
8. Good Food Prom Italy, Countess Morphy

The binding is in green cloth with beige title and author and publisher printed on the spine.
