Methuen’s Shilling Novels, like Methuen’s Cheap Novels, were cheap novels printed and bound with a minimum investment by the publisher. Jacket artwork was aimed to catch the attention of early 20th century readers. An April 1905 Methuen & Co. catalog announces the series with the initial titles:
London’s White Fang is a 1932 thirtieth edition (second in the Shilling Library). This title came relatively late in the series time span. The price (1/-) is announced on the jacket spine. Additional Methuen books on dogs are advertised on the front jacket flap.
