Update 6/12/2024
The Broadway Medieval Library was edited by G.G. Colton and Eileen Power. Titles were issued from 1928 to 1931, with one UK reprint in 1938. Routledge issued a total of 9 titles (in 10 volumes) in the UK. Harcourt Brace issued the first 6 titles (in 7 volumes) in the US. After Harcourt Brace stopped publishing US editions of the series, Dutton and Gotham House issued single volumes in 1930 and 1932. It’s unclear whether these two one-off publications were issued using the Broadway Medieval Library series name. The final series title was not published in the US. Two additional titles were announced but not published.
An advertisement for the new series appeared in The Nation and Athenaeum (UK) on December 8, 1928. The same advert appeared in The Spectator (UK) on December 8, 1928. |
Two additional titles are included in a later advertisement, published in The Times Literary Supplement on Thursday, June 6, 1929. |

The Autobiography of Ousama, translated with an introduction and notes by George Richard Potter, was published in the series in 1929.
Dust jackets are on heavy linen paper and have a stern design using old-style typography. They follow a common style with a few graphical variants from title to title. The book’s title, era, and translator are included on the jacket spine, as well as “With 4 plates and a map,” the price (12s 6d), and the publisher. The series name and editors are at the bottom of the jacket front. A brief description of the book is on the front jacket flap.
